Thomas Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny’s partner at the centre of Arsenal’s defence, has welcomed the Frenchman’s new long-term contract and is delighted the former Lorient man is staying with the Gunners.

The Belgian formed a formidable partnership with Koscienly at the heart of Arsenal’s defence last season from October onwards and the two will be looking to further strengthen their understanding in 2012/13.

The former Ajax man, who has been acting as stand-in captain for Robin van Persie on Arsenal’s Asia tour, spoke of his pleasure in a press conference in Beijing saying, "I heard the news that Laurent extended his contract and I’m really happy”.

The left-footed Belgian then praised the former Lorient man’s contribution to Arsenal since his arrival in 2009. “From the start when he came to Arsenal he has shown he is a great player and he is developing really well. I think he has done everything for the club already and I hope he will stay a few more years”.

The 26-year-old French star put pen to paper on Tuesday in an agreement which should keep him at the club for at least another five years.

Vermaelen also talked about his excitement at being given the armband for the tour of Asia, explaining that it was his dream to play for the Gunners and that he is proud to be leading the side currently.

"Last year I was vice-captain for Arsenal and I was really proud to be in that role for such a big club”, said the 26-year-old. “I dreamed to play for this club and to play an important role as a vice-captain. It makes me really happy to help the players and help the team go forward and win trophies this year”, added the former Ajax captain.
