Former England coach Fabio Capello has his eyes set on helping Russia qualify for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The Italian officially became the manager of Russia after penning a two-year deal. The agreement had been confirmed a few days ago and the former Juventus coach signed today.
Capello touched on a few topics while addressing the press conference in which he was unveiled as the new head coach of Russia, including his goals, thoughts on the captaincy issue and disappointment at not leading England to Euro 2012.
The ex-Real Madrid coach asserted that Russia have great talent and potential when discussing the national team’s prospects and indicated that his real job is to guide the team to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“My contract runs for two years. The goal is to get into the final of the World Cup in Brazil”, said the Italian when asked about his objectives.
“I will also try to prepare young players who will be able to play in the future. It is necessary to rejuvenate the team”, added Capello.
On the issue of Andrei Arshavin, who has been heavily criticised in the country for his comments about Russia’s fans, the newly appointed manager said that he will meet with the Arsenal forward and discuss this issue with him.
“Personally, I will talk Arshavin about the unpleasant situation. Only after a personal conversation will I decide whether to keep the captain’s armband with him or not”.
The 66-year-old also said that not leading England to Euro 2012 was disappointing and it was this which motivated him to take up coaching another international side.
“Having worked for four years with the English team and not playing at the European Championship, I realised that I wanted to continue”, said the Italian. “I got angry, in a good sense of the word.”
Capello’s first assignment is to prepare the squad for a friendly against the Ivory Coast on 15th August.
