Midfielder Alexander Merkel could be poised to swap Genoa for Zenit St. Petersburg, according to sources in Italy.

Genoa only hoovered up the 50% of Merkel’s rights they did not own from AC Milan in May and the 20-year-old has seemed set to push ahead in Serie A in the new season.

But now negotiations are well under way for Merkel to move to Russia in a transfer which could change his career.

With talks between Genoa and Zenit advanced, there has also been a possible change of country at international level mooted for Merkel.

The midfielder moved from Kazakhstan to Germany with his parents at the age of six and has appeared for various German youth teams up to Under-20 level.

But, having not been capped for Germany’s senior side, turning out for Fabio Capello’s Russia is an option for Merkel. And his prospects may be brighter given the 2018 World Cup host’s lack of talented youngsters.

Merkel moved to Italy in 2008 to play for AC Milan, joining the Italian giants from Stuttgart’s youth set-up.
