Ex-Arsenal winger Aleksander Hleb has joined his former club BATE Borisov on a free transfer after he was released by Russian side Krylia Sovetov Samara.

The 31-year-old played at BATE when he started his professional career in 1999 and completed one season with the Belarusian giants before moving on to greener pastures.

The player has now made a return to his former club in order to assist them while most of their squad are representing the Belarusian football team at the London Olympics.

“I’m happy to return to BATE. The team is in a difficult situation right now because a large group of players were picked for the Olympics”, said the former Barcelona winger. “I was asked to help and I accepted the offer with joy”.

“I would like to thank the club and do everything I can in order to help them achieve the goals that have been set”, added the former Belarusian international.

Hleb, whose career deteriorated after a move from Arsenal to Barcelona, was snapped up by Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart in 2000 after solid performances during his season at BATE. The player impressed the football world with his silky touches and exquisite passes – including Arsene Wenger who made him an Arsenal player in 2005.

After four successful seasons at the North London club, the Belarusian international arrived at Barcelona. However, he never enjoyed a run of games in the first team and was thus loaned out to Stuttgart, Birmingham City and Wolfsburg before being released in January 2012, when he joined Russian outfit Krylia Sovetov Samara on a six-month deal.

Now the deal has expired, and Hleb has returned to the country of his origin in order to help the Belarusian team in this difficult period.
