Javier Mascherano has signed a new contract with Spanish giants Barcelona.
The 28-year-old Argentine had recently indicated that he believed there would be little problem coming to an agreement with the Blaugrana to extend his deal – and so it has proven.
Mascherano has put pen to paper on a contract which now runs until 2016 and will keep the former Liverpool midfielder at the Camp Nou until he is 32.
The Argentina international joined Barcelona from Liverpool in 2010.
It took time for Mascherano to establish himself at the Catalan giants, but last season he was regularly used, often in the centre of defence.
Barcelona have been delighted with the player’s impact and have remained determined to keep hold of him.
Mascherano rejected an approach from English Premier League giants Chelsea last summer.
