The future of Liverpool defender Daniel Agger is further in doubt following the Denmark international’s failure to play any part in the Reds’ 1-0 Europa League victory over Gomel last night.

It has been suggested that Agger is injured, but his agent has staunchly rebutted that claim.

And with Agger attracting interest from Barcelona and Manchester City, suspicions have been aroused that the ball-playing centre back could be heading out of Anfield as the club’s apparent drive to cut costs intensifies.

Liverpool are already keen to offload Andy Carroll and Alberto Aquilani, while Dirk Kuyt has already left Anfield along with Maxi Rodriguez.

Now speculation is growing about 27-year-old Agger’s future, especially as a European appearance last night would have complicated a potential sale.

"He is definitely not injured", said Per Steffensen.

"Only the club and the manager can say why he was not part of the squad.

"It is also Liverpool who must say if offers arrive for Daniel."

The player’s representative did insist though that floating chatter that Agger has slapped in a transfer request is untrue, but he added that talks over a new contract – Agger’s deal runs until 2014 – have not begun.

"The reports of a transfer request from Daniel are absolute nonsense", added Steffensen.

"He is still very happy at Liverpool. We have still not heard anything from the club about extending his contract though."

Agger joined Liverpool in 2006 and one year later saw the club reach the Champions League final.

He has had a mixed injury record, though remained largely unscathed last season.
