Jose Mourinho believes that voting for the Ballon d’Or has been skewed in recent years, with the judges not taking into account what a player has won for his club – and it is for this reason the Portuguese has suggested Lionel Messi should not bag the prize for 2012.
The Real Madrid manager would dearly love to see his own player, Cristiano Ronaldo, pick up the accolade, especially after the forward helped Los Blancos to take La Liga away from Messi’s Barcelona last season.
And the former Chelsea boss hopes that the judges will take into account the fact that Barcelona only won the Copa del Rey, while Real Madrid ended the campaign as champions.
But if not Ronaldo, Mourinho has suggested it should then be a Chelsea, Manchester City or another Real Madrid player who picks up the renowned trophy, as those sides won the most important silverware.
"Right now, given what is said, it looks like the Ballon d’Or is for rewarding a career or just one player because many consider him the best", said Mourinho.
"Football is a team sport, the most important thing is that the team wins. And the Ballon d’Or should be given to, in my opinion, a player with a team that won something important.
"Who won the most important things?", further mused the Portuguese.
"Chelsea, who won the Champions League, Real Madrid, who won the championship of the most difficult league, and Manchester City, who perhaps won the championship in the most newsworthy league, because it’s a fantastic league to play in.
"So let no one say that a player who did not win should receive the Ballon d’Or, even if he is a very good player."
