Zenit St. Petersburg are pushing ahead with a swoop for Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov by drawing up a contract worth €5M per year for the Bulgarian.

According to sources in Russia, Zenit boss Luciano Spalletti is preparing to push the boat out to snare the 31-year-old in a bid to help his side’s Champions League tilt.

The Russian champions are targeting making a splash in the competition and believe the vastly experienced Berbatov would aid their cause.

Berbatov has made clear that in his opinion the time has come for a parting of the ways with Manchester United and manager Sir Alex Ferguson understands the striker’s view.

The former Tottenham Hotspur man has slipped firmly down the pecking order at Old Trafford and managed just 12 appearances in the Premier League last season.

During those forays Berbatov still showed his quality, scoring seven times.

It remains to be seen how much Zenit will offer for the forward, who has one year left on his contract with the Red Devils.
