Vurnon Anita is on the verge of moving to Newcastle United after Ajax accepted an offer for the 23-year-old.

The Premier League club had sent a delegation to Amsterdam in a development which unnerved Ajax, who were unsure how to react to the large offer that was set to land, especially with Anita keen on playing in England and having a contract set to expire in 2014.

And now, after substantial talks, Ajax have agreed a fee with the Magpies, which is believed to be an initial €8M with a further €2M to come in add-ons.

Anita has admitted he is happy to be able to take the next step in his career, but also stressed he has not yet ironed out personal terms with Newcastle.

"I have played at Ajax for 13 years. It was a great period and I am grateful to Ajax", said the midfielder.

"The clubs have agreed, but I have not yet. So I’m still with Ajax.

"I think it will be okay, but you never know how it goes."

Anita’s impending departure has not been well received by coach Frank de Boer, who had been counting upon the defensive midfielder in Ajax’s title defence.

"Of course, I find this to be awfully bad", said De Boer.

"Vurnon is a really important player for us."
