Barcelona are stepping up their pursuit of Arsenal midfielder Alex Song and have dispatched vice-president Josep Bartomeu to London to push a deal through.

According to Spanish radio station RAC1, Barcelona have already sent a €15M bid to the Emirates Stadium for Song, and though the Catalan giants have not yet received a reply, the club are confident Arsenal will reject it.

And so Bartomeu is standing by to increase Barcelona’s offer and work to try and find a figure acceptable to the Catalans which would take the Cameroonian to the Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana vice-president is authorised to bid up to €18M for Song, a figure that the Spanish giants are hopeful could be enough to secure the player.

Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova is keen on the Arsenal midfielder and the club’s board has vowed to explore every option to take the former Bastia youth team product away from the Gunners.

Indeed, while the Camp Nou giants would like to welcome the 24-year-old to Spain as soon as possible, they are willing to wait until the very end of the transfer window to thrash out a deal with Arsenal.

Song clocked up 34 appearances in the Premier League last season in a sign of his importance to Arsene Wenger’s men.

He is under contract with the Gunners until 2015.
