New Croatia coach Igor Stimac is disappointed that the transfer saga surrounding Luka Modric this summer has seen the playmaker miss out on vital pre-season action.

Modric is wanted by Real Madrid and the Croatian has already agreed the outline of a contract with the Spanish giants. But no fee has been agreed with the player’s current club Tottenham Hotspur, who are adopting a firm stance and demanding Los Blancos meet the asking price they have set for Modric.

This is disappointing for Stimac, who succeeded Slaven Bilic after Euro 2012, and who needs the creative fulcrum firing on all cylinders for the country’s 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign.

“The situation does not please me at all”, Stimac told AS, addressing the position Modric finds himself in at White Hart Lane.

“He has not played any game all summer”, he added.

Stimac, who played for two English clubs, in the shape of Derby County and West Ham United, during his playing career, is confident that Modric will ultimately end up at the Bernabeu however.

“He will eventually sign for Madrid before the end of the transfer market.”

Stimac faces a tough task succeeding Bilic in charge of Croatia; the current Lokomotiv Moscow man qualified the country for Euro 2008 and Euro 2012. Stimac will need Modric in top form as he attempts to take the country to Brazil in 2014.
