New Russia coach Fabio Capello has explained he is happy to hand Andrei Arshavin a second chance with the national team.

Arshavin landed himself in hot water with the Russian authorities and the country’s fans after Russia’s early exit from Euro 2012 by stating that the expectations of better were not the side’s problem, while he also refused to apologise for failing to advance past a straightforward looking Group A.

The attacking midfielder’s words caused huge controversy in his homeland, with the country’s sports minister Vitaly Mutko reminding Arshavin that "those on the pitch must keep in mind they play for the entire country."

Capello though believes that the former Zenit St. Petersburg man should be offered the opportunity to make amends.

"Everyone deserves a second chance", said Capello, ahead of Russia’s friendly against the Ivory Coast.

"This is his chance to prove to everyone that he can still play an important role in the team", added the Italian.

"No one gets preferential treatment or is ignored in Russia."
