Barcelona star Lionel Messi has said that he respects Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, but has never competed with the Portuguese international.
A fight for the best player in the world between the Argentine and the Portuguese is a source of constant debate, but according to Messi, he does not compete against anyone, not even against Ronaldo.
“I respect him [Ronaldo], but I have no relationship with him nor with a number of other players. We see each other on the pitch and that’s it”, said the 2009 FIFA Player of the Year to Ole in Buenos Aires.
“I only have great relationships with my team-mates, with the management at Barcelona and with Argentine players that I have come to know over the years”, he added.
The 25-year-old forward further insisted that talk of a rivalry between him and the former Manchester United winger are nothing but media’s fancies and blamed the press for trying to create a ‘duel’ between the two.
"With Crristiano, there is no fight or anything else”, insisted Messi.
“All of these rumours are created by the media and the press who want to have a duel between us”.
The player went on to once again reiterate that he never competes with the Real Madrid forward.
“I have never competed with Cristiano and have never fought against him. I try to do my job, and to win titles with Argentina and Barcelona”,.
The 2011 Ballon d’Or recipient also touched the topic of the next Ballon d’Or winner and said that he wants either one of Andres Iniesta or Xavi, his team-mates at Barcelona, to win the title this year.
“There is Cristiano Ronaldo, who is a great player and Casillas too but, personally I wish either of Xavi or Andres Iniesta win it”, said Messi
