Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin is on the verge of signing for Liverpool on a season-long loan after Los Blancos officials steered him to the Reds instead of fellow English side Arsenal, according to Madrid-based daily Marca.

Sahin, whose chances of first team football at the Bernabeu this season were set to be limited, had originally preferred to join Arsenal, but a number of factors have conspired to send the 23-year-old to Anfield; Real Madrid have also maintained a midfielder will leave when Luka Modric is signed and the Croatian’s arrival at the Bernabeu is imminent.

Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho enjoys a good relationship with new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers, in contrast to that which exists between the Portuguese and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger. And this is smoothing Sahin’s passage.

While Mourinho has also had in mind the strengthening of a team Real Madrid could potentially face in the Champions League, Liverpool will only play Europa League football.

And so Sahin has been convinced that he should head to Merseyside, with the Turkey midfielder also not wanting to displease Mourinho, given that he hopes for a bright future at Real Madrid still.

For Wenger, missing out on Sahin is a disappointment as the French tactician has tracked the midfielder since his time at Borussia Dortmund.

Sahin managed just 128 minutes of La Liga football last season and is desperate for regular game time.

The Turkey star only joined Real Madrid last summer from Dortmund.
