Robin van Persie scored a goal on his home debut for Manchester United yesterday and was quick to explain that he will treasure the moment.

The Dutchman played his part in a 3-2 win over Fulham for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men and his debut strike was a delight.

With the ball crossed in from the left hand side, Van Persie, stood just inside the penalty area, let the ball bounce and then hooked a beautiful volley past the Fulham goalkeeper, with the swerving shot bulging the back of the net.

Van Persie had cancelled out Damien Duff’s early goal for the visitors. Further Manchester United strikes from Shinji Kagawa and Rafael ensured the match was 3-1 to the hosts at half time. And despite a Nemanja Vidic own goal in the second period, the Red Devils claimed all the points.

For Van Persie, the match was definitely one to remember as he marked his home debut with a precious goal.

"I think I’ll always look back on this game; that we won on my home debut and that I scored a good goal", the Dutchman told MUTV.

"It was different, of course", added Van Persie, talking about his debut.

"I came here a couple of times before but I always liked this stadium, the size of it. The pitch is big, the pitch is always nice.

"Now I’m a United player, everyone knows that and I’m looking forward to this challenge.

"The fans have been brilliant today, supporting us and they gave me a very warm welcome, so I’m very pleased."

Next up for Manchester United is a trip to newly promoted Southampton next Sunday. Wigan Athletic are the next visitors to Old Trafford before the Red Devils travel to Anfield to play fierce rivals Liverpool.
