Rennes sporting director Pierre Dreossi has cooled talk of an imminent transfer for defensive midfielder Yann M’Vila by insisting that he has nothing new to report.

M’Vila has been the subject of fierce interest from Tottenham Hotspur, while Newcastle and Everton are now believed to be firmly in the race for his signature.

Rennes have accepted that the France international is likely to leave and have snapped up Jean Makoun on a season-long loan from Aston Villa as M’Vila’s replacement.

However, the longer the clock ticks down towards the closing of the transfer window without a resolution to the player’s future, the more his remaining at the Ligue 1 club actually becomes a possibility.

And Dreossi has nothing new to report.

"There is not much new to say. There are some contacts, but not much more than that", said the Rennes transfer supremo at a press conference to unveil Makoun.

"The further we advance, the more like it is [that he stays].

"Now, as I have been saying for some time, we knew that Yann would possibly leave in the last week of the transfer window.

"And now we are in the last week."
