Dynamo Kyiv full-back Goran Popov has sealed a late move to West Bromwich Albion for a year with an option of making the deal permanent after the loan spell.
The player will wear the number 4 shirt during his time at the Hawthorns, but will not be able to feature in the club’s clash against Everton tomorrow.
Baggies manager Steve Clarke was delighted at the signature of the Macedonian international and insisted that his arrival will increase the competition for places in the squad.
“I’ve said many times over the past few weeks that we’ve been looking to bring in one more defender and I’m delighted we’ve managed to sign Goran,” said Clarke to his club’s official website.
“We allowed two left-backs to leave at the end of last season, so it’s very pleasing we’ve got another naturally left-sided player within the group to give us more balance”, he revealed.
“We’ve now got good competition for places in all areas of the squad”.
Clarke admitted that the Hawthorns outfit have been interested in the player for over three years and stressed that Popov showed great commitment as he skipped the chance to play in the Champions League to join West Brom.
“Goran is a player the club have closely monitored for around three years so we know what we’re getting”, said the manager.
“He has also given up the opportunity to play Champions League football with Dynamo Kyiv to join Albion in the Premier League and he’s determined to do well here.”
