Clint Dempsey’s transfer saga is moving towards closure as Fulham’s attacking midfielder has, according to multiple sources, arrived at Spurs Lodge in order to complete a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
The 29-year-old has been linked with a move away from Craven Cottage for the entire summer, with several clubs interested in securing his signature.
None of the interested clubs submitted a concrete offer for the American until today, when Aston Villa came forward and had their bid instantly accepted by the Fulham board.
However, the American international rejected a move to Villa Park insisting that he wanted to play European football – something that Aston Villa are unable to provide.
Liverpool emerged as favourites to sign Dempsey after the player rejected the Villa Park outfit’s approach and indeed the Merseyside giants are thought to have been the player’s preferred destination for much of the summer. And Liverpool did make a bid, only to see it rejected as insufficient.
However, it has now come to light that the Reds have lost out on the attacking midfielder to Spurs, who entered the fray with a very late move for Fulham’s 2011/12 top scorer.
Tottenham have been active in the market on deadline day and after securing the signature of goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, manager Andre Villas-Boas has been scouring the market for forward to replace Rafael van der Vaart, who is now a Hamburg player.
The fee for the transfer remains unknown, but it is to be believed that the move will be officially announced as soon as Dempsey passes a medical and agrees personal terms.
For Liverpool, losing out on the American will be a blow, with Dempsey thought to have his heart set on a switch to Anfield and Reds boss Brendan Rodgers offloading striker Andy Carroll to West Ham on loan to free up space for the 29-year-old.
Tottenham however may feel they have secured a bargain just hours before the window closes.
