Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has stated his belief that Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney are capable of forming a deadly partnership at Old Trafford.

At present Rooney is ruled out through injury, but Ferguson has already given some thought to how the England international can fit alongside summer signing Van Persie – and the results could be spectacular.

All in all, with summer business which also included the arrival of promising youngster Nick Powell, Chilean rising star Angelo Henriquez and Japanese schemer Shinji Kagawa, the Manchester United boss now has a tough task selecting his side for each match.

"It’s not easy picking the team", Ferguson told Manchester United’s official site.

"The players know that. I made reference to that last week. I’ve got a difficult job", he continued.

"The important thing is the end. If the end is right, we’re all satisfied and they’ve all contributed."

The legendary manager then turned his attention to the club’s biggest signing of the summer, Holland international Van Persie.

"Robin is flexible and can play different positions. He can play from the right side or in behind the strikers.

"There are great options with Van Persie because he’s such a mobile player and Wayne can play in behind or play up. Chicharito is the only one-position player we have and that’s through the middle."

And Ferguson is in no doubt that Rooney and Van Persie can pair up.

"Van Persie and Wayne can absolutely play together. No doubt. [Danny] Welbeck can play with him. We’ve got good options which is why it’s so difficult."
