As the transfer deadline passed for most of Europe’s leagues, the continent’s elite clubs found the familiar feeling of Saturday football.

In Germany, champions Borussia Dortmund could not do better than a 1-1 draw with Franconian side Nurnberg, while elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Schalke powered to a 3-1 win over Augsburg and Werder Bremen beat Hamburg 2-0.

The English Premier League saw Tottenham Hotspur’s poor start continue as Andre Villas-Boas’ men were held to a 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane by Norwich City and Swansea City played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with Sunderland.

Italy saw AC Milan shake off their blues by beating Bologna 3-1 away from home, with new signing Giampaolo Pazzini netting a hat-trick.

In France, champions Montpellier won 3-1 away at Sochaux, while Lorient made short work of Nancy, winning 3-0.
