Bologna director general Roberto Zanzi has lamented the fact that the Rossoblu had to sell Gaston Ramirez to a club outside Italy.

The Serie A outfit sold the exciting Uruguayan to English Premier League club Southampton this summer, despite him having been heavily linked with fellow Italian sides AC Milan, Inter, Juventus and Napoli.

Indeed, Ramirez was widely considered to be one of the most promising talents in the country and eyebrows were raised when the attacking midfielder left for club only just promoted to the English top flight.

The deal took time to thrash out, something that Zanzi admits was not ideal.

"The case could have been handled in a better way", stressed the Bologna supremo to Radio Les, before insisting that the fact Ramirez did not move within Italy is a poor reflection on the strength of the country’s top teams.

"Surely this transfer could have occurred more smoothly.

"But that on which it is also necessary to reflect is that our system can no longer afford these talents.

"We need to look for solutions to solve this crisis in our football. We look at what is happening to big clubs like Inter and Milan."

Ramirez has been tipped for big things at Southampton and his departure will be a blow to the Rossoblu for this season.

However, Bologna will not have to be concerned about the Uruguayan popping up and hurting their hopes in Serie A.
