Dutch left-back Alexander Buttner has admitted that he is in dreamland at having scored on his Manchester United debut.

Buttner was given a vote of confidence by Sir Alex Ferguson, who opted to throw the 23-year-old into today’s Premier League clash against Wigan Athletic at Old Trafford.

The game ended 4-0 to the Red Devils with goals from Paul Scholes (51st minute), Javier Hernandez (63rd minute), Buttner (66th minute) and Nick Powell (82nd minute) helping to put Roberto Martinez’ side to the sword.

What was a daunting experience for the Dutchman, who was snapped up this summer from Vitesse, quickly turned into a resounding success, with the defender helping his team-mates to keep a clean sheet and also getting his name on the scoresheet in the process.

"If I play I want to let him [Sir Alex Ferguson] see that I can do a good job. Today I think I did that", said Buttner to MUTV, reflecting upon Manchester United’s 4-0 win.

"I’m happy that I can play my first minutes in the first team. It’s great that we won and I scored and gave a pass for Chicharito to score. It’s a dream for me", he added.

"I was told yesterday I was going to play. I wasn’t nervous until I was standing on the field, looking around. I think it’s normal to be a little bit nervous if you play in front of so many people.

"In Holland, I played in front of 23,000 so it’s beautiful to play for so many more people.

"I’m happy today. I’ve scored my first goal in my first game and I’ll never forget it."

There were question marks over Manchester United’s signing of Buttner in the summer, given that no one else amongst Europe’s elite launched a bid. But the defender is already paying back Ferguson’s faith in his ability.
