Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes has saluted Javi Martinez’ contribution in the Bavarians’ 3-1 win over Mainz in the Bundesliga earlier today.

Heynckes’ men quickly took the lead in the clash, going ahead through summer signing Mario Mandzukic as early as the second minute of the game.

Bayern Munich’s advantage was then doubled by Bastian Schweinsteiger in the 13th minute, before Mainz pulled one back from the penalty spot as Hungarian striker Adam Szalai hit the ball home.

The Bavarians though had the last say of the game, with Toni Kroos scoring the side’s third in injury time.

Martinez was brought on in the 75th minute for Xherdan Shaqiri and, despite a limited amount of time on the pitch at the Allianz Arena, oozed quality which pointed to just why Bayern Munich paid €40M to sign the Spaniard from Athletic Bilbao.

"Especially after the introduction of Javi Martinez, we once again controlled the game", said Heynckes.

"He played very well going forward and showed he is very intelligent.

"He provided the assist for the goal which made it 3-1 excellently."

Bayern Munich will now switch their attention to the Champions League, with a home clash against Spanish side Valencia the opening dish on the menu.
