Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes is determined his side should not look too far ahead in the Champions League.

relatedNewsStory The Bavarians lost in the final of last season’s competition, going down on penalties to Chelsea and, with a factor which made the defeat even more heartbreaking – it was played on home turf at the Allianz Arena.

This evening Bayern Munich start their new Champions League adventure, by hosting Valencia, the first game in a group which also includes BATE Borisov and Lille.

The Bavarians are desperate to make up for last season’s disappointment and go one better by lifting this season’s trophy – but Heynckes wants to concentrate on the task at hand first, which is getting out of the group.

"We must first put in a good performance against Valencia and qualify from the group stage", said the German, when asked about erasing the pain of the loss to Chelsea.

"Of course, the desire is to be in London, at Wembley [for the final].

"But first there is a game where we need to obtain a good result."

Tonight’s clash against Valencia could prove to be crucial in the race to top the group, with the Spanish giants considered Bayern Munich’s biggest threat.
