Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that the Reds should have beaten Manchester United at Anfield earlier today.
Rodgers’ men went down to a 2-1 defeat in what was a match full of talking points, with Liverpool seeing Jonjo Shelvey sent off in the first half, a Luis Suarez penalty appeal denied, a penalty given to Manchester United, which Robin van Persie converted and centre-back Daniel Agger stretchered off.
relatedNewsStory The hosts took the lead in the second half, despite being down to ten men, when Steven Gerrard converted in the 46th minute, catching Manchester United cold.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s men hit back, when Brazilian full-back Rafael curled a beautiful effort past Jose Reina in the Liverpool goal.
Then the Red Devils made sure of the points after Glen Johnson bundled down Antonio Valencia in the box, causing a penalty to be given, which Van Persie duly converted, with only ten minutes left on the clock.
Liverpool had reason to feel that, in an afternoon when so much seemed to have gone against them, they acquitted themselves well. And Rodgers especially believes that his team were the better on the day and thus deserved the three points.
"I’m bitterly disappointed with the result – I thought the best team lost", the Northern Irishman said in his post-match press conference.
"What we could control, I thought the players and the performance level was outstanding. What you can’t control is decisions by the referee.
"We’re bitterly disappointed it didn’t go our way today, but performance wise I thought the players were outstanding.
"We dominated the majority of the game, even with 10 men, but it didn’t go our way."
The result means Liverpool are still without a win in the Premier League this season and places even greater importance upon their visit to Norwich City next weekend.
