Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas has insisted his team must believe they can beat Manchester United for there to be any chance of it happening.
Villas-Boas takes his Spurs team to Old Trafford later today in a Premier League match which has the potential to quickly end the club’s upturn in form.
relatedNewsStory The Portuguese tactician had to wait until 16th September, with a match away at Reading, to end his wait for a first league win with Spurs and that was quickly followed up by victory over QPR at White Hart Lane last weekend.
It is a run that Villas-Boas will not want to come to a halt at Old Trafford – and he insists he will take a positive approach to the game, but that the players must also believe they can pull off a surprise win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s men.
"It’s a difficult game, of course", the former FC Porto boss told his club’s official website.
"It would be tremendous for us to go there and win, because we would really move up the table, join the top group and that would have an important meaning for everyone at this time", he added, before claiming belief is key.
"Obviously, we know the task, to go to United and win is always extremely difficult.
"But as long as there is belief, as long as there is motivation, there is certainly more chance of getting it."
Spurs have a very poor record at Old Trafford in recent years, not even managing to take a point from a Premier League fixture there since 2005.
Villas-Boas will hope that can change.
