Newcastle United midfielder Yohan Cabaye has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur wanted to sign him in the summer – but he did not want to leave St. James’ Park.

Cabaye believes that Spurs had identified him as their preferred successor to playmaker Luka Modric, who was sold to Real Madrid.

relatedNewsStory The French midfielder massively impressed during his first season in the Premier League, having signed for Newcastle from Lille, helping the Magpies to finish fifth.

And he obviously made an impression on Spurs’ talent spotters.

“The offer from Tottenham was to succeed Modric”, Cabaye told Canal +.

“If I had wanted to leave, I would have done”, added the 26-year-old.

“But I am still here and I hope that good things will happen.”

Cabaye has quickly established himself as a key man with Newcastle and will be hoping to enjoy similar success with the club to last season.

Spurs meanwhile ultimately tried to sign Joao Moutinho from FC Porto to replace Modric on transfer deadline day, though could not do a deal.

They were active nevertheless, snapping up Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele from Fulham to boost the final third.
