Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard believes that the Reds can still claim a top four finish in the Premier League despite their poor start to the season.
The Anfield side had to wait until their sixth league game of the season to register their first win, which came against Norwich City last weekend.
relatedNewsStory Before then, Brendan Rodgers’ men went down to damaging defeats to West Brom, Arsenal and Manchester United, also only managing draws against Manchester City and Sunderland.
It was Liverpool’s worst league start to a season for over 100 years.
But Gerrard believes a top four finish should still be Liverpool’s aim – and he thinks they can do it and win a trophy.
Asked by the BBC’s Football Focus programme what the Reds’ target should be, he replied “Top four and a trophy.”
Pressed on whether that was still achievable, Gerrard added “Yes. We’re six games in. The Norwich win will be the catalyst to push us on.”
And for Gerrard, with successive home Premier League games against Stoke City and Reading coming up, Liverpool can start to clock up the wins.
“I’m confident we can go on a run of winning games.
“They are good opportunities but they are also tough games.
“They are games we should be winning, certainly here at home.
“We’ve been playing well for a number of weeks, so if we can continue that I am sure we can take maximum points in both those games.”
