Real Madrid left-back Marcelo is due to undergo surgery on a metatarsal fracture in his right foot on Friday.

The player picked up the injury while in training with Brazil during the current international break.

relatedNewsStoryThe blow of losing Marcelo to injury was further compounded by a groin strain suffered by Fabio Coentrao, meaning manager Jose Mourinho will have to make do without his two first choice left backs for at least a month; Coentrao should be out of action for four weeks, while Marcelo’s recovery period is estimated at 12.

Marcelo is now scheduled to go under the knife on Friday in Amsterdam, with famous surgeon Niek van Dijk operating.

The Dutchman has seen Cristiano Ronaldo three times, first in 2008, then 2009 and 2010.

Van Dijk has also operated on a number of other household names, including Michael Ballack, Robin van Persie, Roy Makaay, Filippo Inzaghi and Patrick Kluivert.

Mourinho will hope that Marcelo can make a speedy recovery and return to action after Christmas.

Real Madrid will also be entitled to compensation of over €20,000 per day while the player is out, due to him picking up his injury on international duty.
