Belgium eased to a 2-0 victory over Scotland last night, sending the Scots plunging to the bottom of Group A, but manager Craig Levein remains defiant.

Scotland managed to hold out until midway through the second half, when Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke opened the scoring. It was quickly followed by a second from Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, who lashed the ball home two minutes later.

relatedNewsStoryLevein’s men struggled to threaten all night, seeing Belgium boss possession, 62% to 38%, and also register far more shots on goal, 18 to Scotland’s four.

The result leaves Scotland stuck at the bottom of Group A and with little chance of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Levein though wants to keep his job.

"I want to stay on as manager; the rest isn’t up to me", he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

"I’ll continue to do the job to the best of my ability and we’ll see what happens", he added.

Levein’s record in charge of Scotland does not make for pleasant reading, with the former Leicester manager having only won three of the last 12 games, with two of those victories coming over minnows Liechtenstein.

The manager has also struggled to recover from the damage done to his reputation amongst supporters by playing with a formation of 4-6-0 away to the Czech Republic in qualifying for Euro 2012.
