PSV Eindhoven have revealed they looked seriously at re-signing goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes from Tottenham Hotspur, but the move was not financially viable.
The 31-year-old Brazilian joined Spurs in 2008 from PSV, with the English side paying a fee of around €10M to take him to White Hart Lane.
relatedNewsStoryGomes quickly established himself as Spurs’ number 1, but has slipped firmly down the pecking order in recent years and did not manage a single Premier League appearance last season, with his first team action restricted to three Europa League games and one bow in the League Cup.
At 31 years old, Gomes is entering his goalkeeping peak and is thought to be open to leaving White Hart Lane, especially given that new manager Andre Villas-Boas swooped to bring in France number 1 Hugo Lloris from Lyon in the summer, while veteran American Brad Friedel remains a fearsome competitor.
But returning to Dutch giants PSV looks a long shot for Gomes, with the Eredivisie giants insisting that when they thought of him recently, the figures simply did not add up.
"We seriously looked at it and he was interested in it", said PSV technical director Marcel Brands.
"But it was his salary demands and an asking price of €9M which made it unfeasible", he added.
It remains to be seen whether there will be any movement on the part of Spurs and Gomes before the January transfer window opens, but PSV coach Dick Advocaat has three able shot-stoppers to choose from at present.
Polish goalkeeper Przemyslaw Tyton had held the number 1 shirt, but Advocaat has recently given opportunities to 28-year-old Boy Waterman.
The former Rangers manager can also call upon Ruud Swinkels, his third-choice option.
