Schalke won the Revierderby 2-1 against Borussia Dortmund earlier today.

Away at champions Dortmund, Schalke looked to have a stiff task, but were handed the lead by on-loan attacking midfielder Ibrahim Afellay in the 14th minute, stunning Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Falling behind by two goals sparked Dortmund into action and prolific goal-getter Robert Lewandowski reduced the deficit only six minutes later.

Dortmund could not find an equaliser though and went down to a painful defeat which places a serious question mark over their ability to challenge Bayern Munich for the title this season.

Klopp’s men could have no complaints at losing a match which saw both sides register eight shots on goal, his side just shade possession 52% to 48%, but Schalke dominant in terms of successful tackles made.

While Dortmund and Schalke were battling it out for the right to fight Bayern Munich for the title, the Bavarians were putting Fortuna Dusseldorf to the sword in ruthless fashion.

Jupp Heynckes’ side were 2-0 up away from home by half time and then, thanks to a double from Thomas Muller and a goal from Brazilian Rafinha, ran out comfortable 5-0 winners.

The victory means Bayern Munich have now won all eight of their Bundesliga games so far this season, scoring 26 goals and conceding only two.

Eintracht Frankfurt stayed second, on 19 points to Bayern Munich’s 24, thanks to a 3-1 home win over Hannover.
