Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes believes he witnessed his side’s best performance of the season so far when they thrashed Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga yesterday.

The Bavarians came into the match with a perfect record of seven wins from seven league games and quickly looked as if they would extend that by racing into a 2-0 lead by half time.

In the second period it was more of the same from the powerful Munich giants, for who striker Thomas Muller continued his fine form by firing in a brace, before Brazilian defender Rafinha completed the rout by scoring Bayern’s final goal close to full time, making it 5-0.

Heynckes, who has raised the prospect of retiring from the game at the end of the season, could not have been happier with what he saw.

"This was the best game of the season", he beamed after the match.

"We played superior football from the first to the last minute", he added.

The result puts Bayern Munich on 24 points with eight wins from eight games.

And combined with reigning champions Borussia Dortmund losing 2-1 at home to bitter rivals Schalke, the Bavarians already look to have one hand on the Bundesliga shield.

Indeed, Bayern Munich have scored 26 goals and conceded only two in a powerful display of attacking power.

Now Heynckes’ men will switch their attention to the Champions League, where French side Lille provide the opposition on Tuesday evening.
