Liverpool assistant manager Colin Pascoe has blamed bad luck for the Reds’ poor goals scored tally this season, with Brendan Rodgers’ right hand man stressing that he would only start to worry if chances were not being created.

Taking away Liverpool’s 5-2 victory away at lowly Norwich City, the Reds have managed just five goals in seven Premier League matches, a statistic which has worried some fans given the lack of striking options on the bench.

With Italian hitman Fabio Borini injured, Liverpool have only one established striker at their disposal – Uruguayan star Luis Suarez.

The Reds did benefit from 17-year-old winger Raheem Sterling’s eye for goal at the weekend, after the former Queens Park Rangers youth player scored the goal which helped Liverpool to a 1-0 win over Reading in the Premier League.

Liverpool have been more potent in Europe and scored five away at Young Boys in their Europa League group opener and another two against Serie A side Udinese at Anfield.

And Pascoe is not becoming unduly concerned, believing, as he does, that slightly better fortune would have contributed towards a vastly different picture.

relatedNewsStory"The boys are practising [becoming more clinical in front of goal] but if they weren’t creating chances then we would start worrying", he told Liverpool’s official site.

"They are getting in the right areas and getting the right crosses and passes in but we have just been a little unfortunate in that the ball has been landing on the other side of the post."

Liverpool will hope to at least continue their good goalscoring record in Europe when they play host to Russian Premier League side Anzhi Makhachkala at Anfield tomorrow (preview here).

After that, all eyes quickly shift to Sunday’s Merseyside derby against Everton at Goodison Park.
