Ajax striker Siem de Jong has told his team-mates they must follow up their 3-1 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League by beating the Citizens again when the two next meet.
De Jong, who is Ajax captain, scored the opening goal for his team at the Amsterdam ArenA as Frank de Boer’s men outclassed the English champions to claim three valuable points.
Now Ajax sit third in Group D on three points, with Manchester City bottom on just a single point.
The victory though has put the Dutch champions within striking distance of second placed Real Madrid (six points) and group leaders Borussia Dortmund (seven points).
Now Ajax are looking forward to travelling to the Etihad Stadium on 6th November for the second of their double-header of games against Manchester City.
"That was an important moment", noted De Jong after the match.
relatedNewsStory"Fortunately, we got to 3-1, which made it a lot easier. Then the team kept the ball."
De Jong is clear though about what is needed next, lest his side’s efforts against Roberto Mancini’s men go to waste.
"We need to go and get the points [in Manchester], otherwise the result today doesn’t matter much."
For Manchester City too the second clash against Ajax looks crucial, as the Citizens surely need to win their three remaining group matches to have any chance of progressing to the Round of 16.
