Atletico Madrid are well advanced with plans to replace Colombian striker Radamel Falcao if he is tempted away from the Vicente Calderon, according to Spanish source Punto Pelota.

And Diego Simeone’s men have narrowed down their preferred list of targets to just two names: Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez and Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski.

Atletico would dearly love to keep hold of Falcao, who has torn La Liga defences to shreds this season and also impressed on the European stage.

However, the capital club are well aware that the former FC Porto man is a potential target for Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid – all clubs who could afford to activate his release clause of €60M, a development which would leave Atletico powerless to prevent the departure of their star striker.

And, aware of this, the Europa League winners have not been standing idly by.

Manchester United’s Mexican striker Hernandez is a popular option, with the thought that the Red Devils may be open to selling a player who has slipped out of the starting eleven picture due to the summer arrival of Robin van Persie.

Lewandowski is a more ambitious target, given Borussia Dortmund’s determination to keep hold of the Poland international.

The prolific hitman also has a number of other admirers, including Manchester United and Juventus.

Jumping to the front of the queue for the Pole then could be a difficult task for Atletico but, were the club to be armed with €60M from the sale of Falcao, snapping up the striker may not be mission impossible.
