Liverpool assistant manager Colin Pascoe has admitted the Reds are hoping Marouane Fellaini does not win his race to be fit for today’s Merseyside derby.
Everton are hopeful that the powerful Belgian midfielder will shrug off the knee injury which forced him to miss last weekend’s 2-2 draw against Wigan, but Liverpool are crossing their fingers for Fellaini not to start.
And that would be a blow to a side already missing experienced midfielder Steven Pienaar through suspension, but a boost to a Liverpool side desperate to claim three points at Goodison Park.
"He [Pienaar] is a very good player and for the opposition to lose one of their best players is great for us", Pascoe told Liverpool’s official site, reflecting upon the South African’s suspension.
"Fellaini has been injured, I’m not quite sure if he might be back for the game on Sunday", he added.
"That would be a big bonus for ourselves – their best players either injured or suspended."
relatedNewsStoryEverton have so far shown better form than their rivals in the Premier League this season and sit well above Liverpool in the standings.
Brendan Rodgers’ men have seen their form improve of late though, with three clean sheets kept in a row, and the club’s young talents appear to be growing in stature by the game.
A fiercely fought Merseyside derby awaits and the winners would receive a confidence boost as well as precious bragging rights.
