Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has saluted what he sees as a "huge three points" after the Red Devils beat Chelsea 3-2 at Stamford Bridge.

The match was full of incident, with Manchester United taking a 2-0 lead but then being pegged back to 2-2. Chelsea then saw two players sent off in quick succession, while Sir Alex Ferguson’s men scored a third, ensuring all three points were heading back to Old Trafford.

The victory keeps Manchester United level on points with neighbours Manchester City, while also cutting Chelsea’s lead at the top of the Premier League to just a single point.

Understandably then, Carrick sees the win as one of great importance.

"It’s a huge three points", the midfielder told MUTV.

"Not winning here for a long time against our biggest rivals, we wanted to put that right and we wanted to win for that.

And the England star stressed that, for him, the victory at Stamford Bridge was long overdue given his side’s poor luck at the ground in recent years.

"Over the last three or four years we’ve had some really great performances here and not come away with what we deserved, so today it was sweet to get the three points.

"We’ve really played some great stuff and the performances have been spot on, so to come away with no wins has been disappointing and we felt the next win was close.

"We have had some decisions not go our way and it’s been tough for us here, but maybe that turned around for us today."
