Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes that the barrage of criticism which has come Luis Suarez’ way is spurring the Uruguayan on.
Suarez has suffered a controversial time in England since signing for the Reds in the 2011 January transfer window. Last year he was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra by the English Football Association and banned for eight matches.
This season has seen him again under the spotlight, with voices from a number of quarters labelling the former Ajax man a diver.
There is little doubt that all Suarez does in a red shirt is analysed time and again, but Rodgers believes that, far from making the 25-year-old unhappy in England, it only increases his motivation.
And the Liverpool manager insists Suarez simply loves English football.
"He loves playing in English football", Rodgers told his club’s official site.
relatedNewsStory"I speak with Luis regularly and he loves the passion and excitement of the game over here.
"He is a player who’s mentally very strong, as you can see from his time here with the amount of stick he’s taken.
"It’s actually a driver for him. It really motivates him."
Liverpool will be delighted about Suarez’ recent form, with the striker scoring one and causing another against Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday, a match which ended as a 2-2 draw.
With Fabio Borini out injured, Suarez is Liverpool’s only established goal-getter, yet seems to be handling the burden of finding the back of the net and even excelling under the pressure to be a motivating factor.
