Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is confident that the club’s American owners will back his desire to bring in players in the January transfer window.

Rodgers was quick to bemoan how thin he believes the Reds’ squad is following Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat at Anfield against Swansea City in the League Cup earlier this week.

Liverpool appear stretched in several areas, not least up front, where Rodgers’ decision to allow Andy Carroll to join West Ham on loan, without having signed a replacement before signing off on the deal, has left a clear need for attacking reinforcements.

Following an injury to Fabio Borini, Luis Suarez is Liverpool’s only established striking option.

And Rodgers will be aiming to address that and other areas in the winter window, with a belief that he will have backing from Fenway Sports Group.

"We’ll have funds. I’m in talks with the owners at the moment along with our recruitment team. We know we need to reinforce the group, so that’s something that is ongoing", he explained at a press conference.

"They have been terrific in their mentality considering the games they’ve been playing.

"At this moment in time, it really is about reinforcing the group rather than looking too much at people going the other way."
