Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes that the attacking quality in the Premier League has improved and this has thrown down the gauntlet to defences across the top flight.
Wenger’s side were involved in a remarkable 7-5 League Cup victory over Reading in midweek, while their opponents this weekend, Manchester United, lost 5-4 away at Chelsea.
In total, the two teams that will meet at Old Trafford tomorrow were involved in games in midweek in which an astonishing total of 21 goals were scored.
In the Premier League, Arsenal’s defence has been tight, with just six goals conceded meaning the Gunners have the tightest backline in the top flight at present.
However, the trend is clear and it is moving towards the attackers, as Wenger well appreciates.
"You have to give credit as well to the offensive quality in the Premier League, and to the offensive quality of Reading the other night. It is not always about your weaknesses, it is about strengths as well", he told his club’s official site.
relatedNewsStory"Last night the [Chelsea v Manchester United] game finished 5-4, but it could have been seven as well. Both teams had chances. I believe the offensive quality has improved a lot."
While the Frenchman will hope his side’s good defensive league record continues on Saturday, he has insisted that the club’s defenders are well developed in training, although stressed that there is only so much that can be done.
"It is not only down to work, we worked last year as well.
"People forget that last year we were the team with the least shots against us in the league.
"We have always worked defensively. It is not just because you don’t work that you concede goals."
