Montpellier are confident defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa will extend his contract, according to sources in France – however, there is a catch for the French champions.
Yanga-Mbiwa’s current deal at the Stade de la Mosson expires next summer and he has been widely tipped to head for the exit door.
The 23-year-old could have left this summer, but Montpellier rebuffed interest from the likes of AC Milan and Arsenal by slapping a big asking price on his head, regardless of the defender’s contract situation.
Montpellier were keen for Yanga-Mbiwa to be available for coach Rene Girard’s Champions League campaign, while they also wanted to ensure the best chance possible of defending their Ligue 1 crown.
That ran the risk of the centre back leaving for free next summer.
But now Montpellier may avert that.
relatedNewsStoryIt is thought that Yanga-Mbiwa will agree to sign a contract extension, but only if it includes a clause which will allow him to leave in the summer for a set price.
That would allow the defender to head elsewhere, however, it would also mean Montpellier would receive a fee.
That would be welcome for the French champions, even if it may be below the amount they would have been able to realise were Yanga-Mbiwa on a long-term deal.
