Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini believes that his side are not yet ready to challenge for the Champions League.

Mancini’s men are in a tough spot in Group D, sitting bottom of the section with only one point from three games.

In an echo of last year’s poor performance in Europe’s blue ribbon competition, Manchester City have lost against Real Madrid and Ajax, while scoring only a draw against Borussia Dortmund.

Now the pressure is on the English champions to take full points when they host Ajax this evening.

However, even if the Citizens were able to defy the odds, win their final three group matches and qualify for the Round of 16, Mancini would not enter the knockout phase with expectations of winning the trophy.

Simply put, Mancini does not think his Manchester City side are contenders.

relatedNewsStory"I don’t think that we are ready to win the Champions League", the Italian told a press conference.

"If we say this, we are not honest", he added.

"We are a good team. We are not ready like the other teams."

Mancini also stated his belief that the Citizens need to find their scoring boots to have any hope of advancing; Manchester City currently have a goal difference of minus three.

"Now, we have improved our defensive phase, but we need to start scoring like last year and I think we need to improve our offensive phase now."
