While Manchester City reflected upon a likely exit from the Champions League after drawing 2-2 at home against Ajax last night, the Dutch side were left thinking they are on the verge of at least booking a spot in the Europa League.

Ajax currently sit third in the group on four points, three behind second placed Real Madrid and four behind leaders Borussia Dortmund; the Dutch champions enjoy their own lead, of two points, over bottom placed Manchester City.

But while Manchester City came into the clash dreaming of taking three wins from their final three group games and making a push for one of the two qualification spots, Ajax were already thinking more realistically and in terms of the Europa League.

Claiming a Europa League spot, for finishing third, could also eliminate Manchester City from Europe completely, as the Citizens would likely finish bottom.

And, reflecting upon the 2-2 draw in Manchester, Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld was left with the very real impression that the Dutch champions are on the verge of sealing the Europa League spot.

"Of course, we would have preferred to win, but now we have a good chance of qualifying for the Europa League", said Alderweireld.

"With a small miracle, maybe even still the Champions League", he added.

relatedNewsStoryAjax will now surely focus on gaining the required points to cement third place, with an eye on what would be a surprise push into the top two.

Frank de Boer’s men face Borussia Dortmund at home on 21st November, before travelling to Real Madrid on the final matchday on 4th December.
