Newcastle midfielder Vurnon Anita believes it is quite normal for opposing teams to hate Luis Suarez.

The Liverpool striker has been involved in a series of controversial moments since joining the Merseyside giants in the 2011 January transfer window from Ajax.

Last season Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra, while this season he has been slammed for perceived diving.

Anita, who played with Suarez at Ajax, is not surprised by the strong response the Uruguayan has elicited, with him loved by Liverpool fans but loathed by the opposition.

And for the Dutchman, that is simply Suarez.

"In Holland it was the same", Anita told BBC Newcastle.

"I know him very well and I know he plays like that", he continued.

Anita revealed that he keeps in touch with Suarez too, who he considers a friend and who he knows is enjoying his time in English football.

"He’s a very nice guy. He likes to joke with people.

"He’s enjoying himself in England. We speak a lot and we keep in touch."
