Veteran Manchester United star Ryan Giggs understands exactly why Robin van Persie has been compared to Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Giggs often turned provider for Van Nistelrooy during the Dutchman’s prolific spell at Old Trafford between 2001 and 2006, during which time he terrorised defences both in the Premier League and Champions League.

And in countryman Van Persie, snapped up from Arsenal during the summer, Giggs can see shades of Van Nistelrooy, especially when it comes to finishing.

Van Persie came off the bench to score Manchester United’s equaliser against Braga in the Champions League last night, a platform which allowed the Red Devils to go on and win the game 3-1 in Portugal.

The Dutchman was also on target last weekend against his former club Arsenal and has started life at Old Trafford in prolific fashion.

And Giggs can see where the comparisons with Van Nistelrooy come from – and agrees.

"The keeper came rushing out but he’s still a great finisher", he told MUTV, speaking about Van Persie’s goal against Braga.

relatedNewsStory"I think everybody knew when he went through that there was only going to be one outcome.

"His confidence is just sky high at the moment. I read last week that a lot of the players think he’s similar to Ruud in the respect that Ruud used to get a chance and more often than not he’d put them away.

"That’s the case with Robin at the minute; his confidence is high, we’re creating chances for him and he’s putting them away."

Next up for Van Persie and Manchester United is a trip to face Aston Villa at the weekend, in a return to Premier League action.
