Chelsea have confirmed that defender John Terry will only be out for a matter of weeks and not the months originally feared.
Terry was stretchered off against Liverpool in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge at the weekend.
It was initially feared that the centre-back could be out of action for a long period, so bad did the incident look.
Indeed, there was a genuine fear that Terry may have injured his cruciate ligaments, but Chelsea have now confirmed that those worries are off the table.
"Today’s MRI scans on John Terry’s right knee thankfully show no significant damage to the cruciate ligaments", read a statement issued by Chelsea.
"Chelsea Football Club’s medical team will conduct further tests over the next two or three days once the swelling has subsided to determine how long John will be out, but it will be a matter of weeks not months", it added.
The news will be a boost to Chelsea boss Roberto Di Matteo who had feared being without the powerful defender for a long spell.
relatedNewsStoryIt remains to be seen exactly for how long Terry will now be sidelined, but the defender is likely to be back in action in time for the busy period of Christmas games.
Terry scored Chelsea’s only goal of the game against Liverpool, before having to leave the pitch.
He struck in the 20th minute of the match.
