Leeds United manager Brian McDermott has revealed that he is involved in talks with at least five players, and is keen on signing them in a bid to strengthen his squad ahead of the 2013/14 season.

The Peacocks snapped up 24-year-old English striker Matt Smith on a two-year deal from League One side Oldham Athletic yesterday.

However, the former Reading boss has explained that there will be more signings to follow this summer.

"On one we’ve nearly agreed a deal verbally, and if someone agrees a deal with me verbally that means it’s done as far as I’m concerned", McDermott told BBC Radio Leeds.

"We have a couple of others we’ve been talking about before, and another two we’re talking to as well."

Leeds United finished 13th in the Championship in the 2012/13 season, with 61 points – just seven clear of the relegation zone, and 26 adrift of eventual winners Cardiff City.

McDermott, who arrived at Elland Road in April this year, has also insisted on signing players who have the ambition, hunger, and the willingness to excel, like himself.

"I believe I have something to prove, I know how I feel about this club and trying to move forward, and I only want players to come to the club who have that same hunger and desire inside them.

"Whether any more deals get done in the next week or two doesn’t really matter as far as I’m concerned, it’s simply a case of getting them done”, he added.

The Peacocks start their pre-season training from 27th June.
