Ajax director of football Marc Overmars has bemoaned the club’s inability to compete with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City for players, as the Dutch champions prepare to lose out on Vitesse midfielder Marco van Ginkel.
The Eredivisie champions made a €7m bid for Van Ginkel, but saw it turned down by Vitesse as Chelsea arrived with an €8.5m offer.
While Van Ginkel’s agent has stressed that nothing has yet been decided regarding the player’s future and will not be until after the European Under-21 Championship, it looks unlikely that he will move to Ajax.
And Overmars accepts that once richer clubs get involved, Ajax suffer.

"We were very interested in Marco and had a lot of money for [the transfer]", Overmars told Voetbal International.
"But if we have to compete with an English club it is difficult. Ajax don’t have the funds of Chelsea.
"The transfer market is now set in motion by rich clubs like Monaco, Chelsea and Manchester City."
Van Ginkel was in impressive form for Vitesse last season, helping the Arnhem-based side finish fourth.
And in so doing he caught the attention of Ajax coach Frank de Boer.
The Dutch champions will have to make do without the 20-year-old next season though.
