Belgium right full-back Luis Pedro Cavanda appears to be on his way to English Premier League side Sunderland, according to Belgian broadcaster RTBF.

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio considers the Lazio right-back an ideal successor to Phil Bardsley, who is believed to be leaving the Black Cats this summer.

22-year-old Cavanda has a contract with the Eagles that is due to run until next summer.

Both clubs have already met, but have not reached an agreement as yet.

Cavanda started his senior club career with Lazio in 2010, and was subsequently sent on loan to Torino and Bari in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

He clocked up 26 appearances for his club and country in the 2012/13 season, assisting three times.

The defender has refused to extend his contract with the Serie A side, which finished seventh this term, and is widely expected to make the switch to Sunderland.

The Angola-born Belgium Under-21 international played his last international game in October last year against Israel Under-21s, under head coach Johan Walem.
